Beautiful weather yet again for the race. The 20k riders were lucky enough to complete almost the entire race before the heat cranked up too much. The 37k and 50k riders had more heat to deal with being out there for longer, but track conditions were better than ever with some recent rain cutting down the dust without creating too many bogs although there were a few wettish patches, just enough to muddy up legs and bikes.
More crashes than usual this year to keep the medics busy. The worst injury was a broken rib in one of our older riders, but he is ok. He is actually the course designer's father-in-law so at least he knows who to blame.
A couple of the 37km riders who were out in front took the wrong turn and ended up riding against the flow of the 50k riders. It seems every year we have at least one rider who does something we’d never imagined or planned for!
50km Race
Darry Stevens took out the victory in the gruelling 50k race, with Jared Scollay coming in second like last year and Carl Van der Heuval third. First woman was Ingrid Richter who finished among the top third of the men.
37k Race
Kirk Wotherspoon and Martin Hughes were first and second males respectively in the 37k with Jonathan Thompson third. Women's 37k winner was Janine Kavanagh who easily broke the women's 37k record with Jackie Orman 2nd. The previous record-holder, Shiree Flutey came in third.
20km Race
72 riders chose the 20k event, which was definitely the most popular distance for our female riders with 32 of them competing. First male was Glenn Larsen with Mike Boulton 2nd and Adrian Frenay 3rd. Mylina Miller was first woman, Tui Allen second and Rosie Smith third.
13km Race
First male was Connor Shalloe with Thomas Keeling second and Harry Petre third. First girl was Leilani Scully with Georgia Whitehead second.
10km race
First male was Riki Newport with Cody Mortenson second and Gus Robertson third. First girl was Niamh Shalloe with Annette Jardine second.
